A word on self-doubt, knowing who we are in Christ, and a list of scriptural affirmations.
I think it is so easy to forget who we are in the midst of everything the world tells us we should be. Social media, other people’s opinions, whatever diet or micro-insecurity that’s trending, all of those things are constantly lying to us and telling us what we’re supposed to be. These things are constantly chiseling away at our confidence, placing doubt into who we are. Placing doubt into our Creator, who made us purposefully in His image. This isn’t going to be easy to hear, so I’m going to hold your hand when I say this: when we aren’t confident in who we are, we aren’t confident in our Creator. Because if we believe He was wrong in how He made us, if we aren’t confident in His creation, how can we be confident in anything He has made or planned. Anything and anyone who takes away your confidence, who plants seeds of insecurity is not from God and you should flee. I’m not talking about the friend that calls out your bad behavior or the YouTube video that tells you to get in the gym. We need encouragement and accountability, that’s Biblical and so important. That’s life-giving.
But I’m talking about things that are life-stealing. That can be different for you than it is for me. Something that I find encouraging might make you look at yourself in disgust. We are all created uniquely and that means the enemy can get to us in different ways. For me, the biggest way the enemy can get to me through people’s comments. Like most of us, I’ve struggled with believing that I am who God says I am my whole life. Lately, a lot of that has been driven by things people have said to me. I don’t think the things that were said to me were said with malice, at least I choose to believe that they weren’t. I don’t hold any ill will towards the people who’ve made comments that were life-stealing, we are all flawed and we’re all just trying our best. I’ve forgiven them, because I don’t think they were trying to hurt me and even if they were, I know they weren’t trying to plant seeds of doubt in our Creator. But that’s the truth of what it did.
When we lose confidence in ourselves, we lose confidence in the one who has created us. I’ve had so much doubt in myself that I lost sight of who I am, who God is, what anything even is. But that is not what the Lord wants for us! The Lord loves us so deeply, so fiercely. He never wants us to doubt how loved, how valuable, how worthy we are in His eyes. Run away from the things that make you forget or make you doubt. Run towards Him when you do, look to His Word. Remember that you are everything He says you are. I made this list of scriptural affirmations, reminding me of who God says I am and His promises. Read them to yourself in the mirror and know the goodness of God. Know that you are deeply loved, fully known, and made in the image of a perfect God.
Lovingly Always, Mary Hannah
